Here are a few commonly used ingredients that are harmful to your body:

1. Mineral oil is a petrochemical derived from crude oil. It is used as a lubricant and works by creating an oily coating over the skin to retain moisture. It clogs pores, traps in toxins and starves your skin of oxygen.
2. Phthalates are industrial chemicals used in plastics and commonly found in everything from makeup to nail polish to perfume. They are labeled “toxic” by environmental laws, yet they are not regulated in personal care products. Studies have shown they can damage the liver and kidney, as well as lead to decreased fertility and birth defects.
3. Parabens are chemical preservatives used in cosmetics, shampoos, moisturizers and shaving gels. They are causing increasing concern because they mimic estrogen in the body and have been found in breast cancer tumors.
4. Propylene glycol is a synthetic liquid substance, liquid mineral oil, used to preserve moisture. It can be found in antifreeze, and it is used as a preservative in flavored coffee; however, it is also used in a variety of cosmetics and hair products. It can harm the liver, kidney, lungs and skin.
5. Sodium lauryl sulfate is used as detergents, surfactants and foaming agents. These compounds can be found in almost any kind of industrial cleaning agent. They are even more widely used as major ingredients in cosmetics, hair conditioners, toothpaste, about 90% of all shampoos, other products that foam (including those made especially for babies), and in products designed to be left on the skin for an extended period of time, for instance, bubble bath.SLS is rapidly absorbed and retained in the eyes, brain, heart, and liver, which may result in harmful long-term effects.
